Planting Organic Lemongrass - The Return!

[No posts at all for the whole of April! Tsk tsk...]

I had previously tried growing some organic lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus), which ended in a resounding FAIL! But then a helpful reader (A Canadian in King Parakramabahu's Court) suggested getting the roots going in a glass first before putting it in the ground.

So I tried it out - after a few days, the stalks started growing out

and there was some root growth

I stripped off the outer leaves

and cut the stalks back too (because someone else had told me that this would encourage root growth)

Only four days later, the results were impressive! Lots more roots

and the stalks have grown back too

I've been lazy since then and have not transferred to a pot, but I will do asap and report back :)

Good luck with the lemongrass, Julian! It's great to see a new post after ages!!

The survey sounds interesting. More Malaysian blogs on Blotanical now and I love to visit them. The plants, the greenery--all look amazing!

You're welcome - I planted them out but I think I waited too long and/or cut back the stems too much as nothing's happening now :( Think I'll have to go for a third shot...

Recently I did the same thing with lemongrass stalks. After I planted them in pots (I live in an apartment), some survived while the rest shriveled up and died. A friend told me my pots are too shallow as the roots of the lemon grass can go really deep. Maybe they'll do well in your garden if you plant them into the ground.

Thanks - my most recent attempt failed again... :( Will keep trying though!

Finally, my lemongrass is growing -outside my house. Not a big bunch but thriving:) Yes, if we soak it in water, roots will appear, so good luck!

i live in thailand & have had goog success in growing these. initially, i planted the single bunches all over the place, but a friend told me to grow several bunches together. so i planted 3-4 clumped together & they really thrived.

I am doing a nonprofit website for lemongrass in my biology class and would love to feature your photos and provide a link back to your site! Could you give me permission for this please!

thank you,
Elizabeth
